Tower Bridge On The Big Screen

As you know from the photo competition that we ran recently, we love Tower Bridge! Here’s a little bit of Tower Bridge TV trivia…

It’s a British institution that’s as iconic as bangers and mash, so it’s no wonder that Daniel Craig and the Queen were filmed swooping through Tower Bridge in their Union Jack-emblazoned helicopter on their way to the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. This iconic London landmark, which took eight years to complete, has featured in some must-watch films throughout the years. Here’s our top five picks, let us know your favourites…

Spice World (1997)

Tower Bridge Spice Girls

Someone should have told the Spice Girls the Bridge Lift Times in this tongue-in-cheek comedy, but that doesn’t stop Posh, Scary, Ginger, Sporty and Baby when they’re late to perform at The Royal Albert Hall. Victoria Beckham replaces Meat Loaf as the driver and puts her stiletto slingbacks on the gas to make The Spice Bus fly over the crossing. They may break the Bridge’s 20mph speed limit, but at least they make the concert. Phew!

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

Daniel Craig is not the only James Bond to have shared some screen time with the 800ft-long Bridge. In his third outing as 007, Pierce Brosnan swaps his BMW Z8 for a speedboat as he chases an assassin along the Thames in a thrilling, extended opening scene. Bond, of course, comes out on top, left only a little shaken, and not stirred. Sorry.

Frenzy (1972)

We’ll skip over the grisly necktie murders in this Hitchcock film and focus on some pretty groundbreaking camerawork that’s used to establish life in 70s London – and a return to filming in the UK for the British director. Accompanied by a soundtrack by Ron Goodman, much of the skyline has since changed, apart from Tower Bridge, which has been a must-see for visitors since construction was completed in 1894.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013)

The team set up camp across the river at Old Billingsgate to get this distance shot of Tower Bridge – the perfect place for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges to attend a car auction, where they need to take care of some business. The height of the 213ft towers are impressive on their own, so no CGI is needed for this part of the movie!

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Bridget Jones Diary - Tower Bridge filming location

The big knickers franchise is about to make a big screen comeback – but will loveable Bridget still head to work via Tower Bridge? Although the filmmakers used a bit of artistic license with her route to the office, these scenes were shot very early in the morning and the other ‘commuters’ featured are actually all extras. We wonder if the 40,000 people who cross Tower Bridge each day are also thinking about Mr Darcy?
