NAB Show 2016 – Roundup

Trickbox NAB Show 2016 - Top Kit

Well, that’s another year for NAB Show! And what a year. Possibly the most exciting show for some time. It was the show that shouted, “You know that stuff everyone’s been banging about for ages? Well now it’s here and it’s really happening!” It was the show where we saw 4K and IP grow up and become a full end-to-end workflows – and not just headline singular devices that are ‘capable of 4K’.

So where do we start? Our last two posts, covering the first days of NAB Show 2016 – NAB Show 2016 – Day 0! and NAB Show 2016 – Day 1! – covered our first impressions on some of the headline new product announcements from the key players in the industry.

Without repeating ourselves too much, here’s the key news and product announcements we took away from NAB Show 2016:

Calrec Brio

Calrec Brio

A new compact member of the Bluefin2 range. Could be great for flyaway productions – as the Calrec tag line says, “Get up and go with Brio”…

I bet there’s not a company – that’s in anyway related to TV or video – that doesn’t have a G-Tech hard drive on their premises… So in retrospect, it was inevitable that G-Technology would bring out a network-attached storage (NAS) product – designed for high bandwidth video. Wasn’t it?

Ross Video 12G SDI and IP I/O

Ross’s range of products has always been great, but it’s fantastic to see they’re embracing and rolling out 12G SDI and IP I/O products and product upgrades – including their Acuity vision mixer range and their openGear cards.

Broadcast alliances

There was lots of talk and mention of the ‘alliances’, including the AIMS Alliance, the TICO Alliance and the Ultra HD Forum. The Ultra HD Forum released the first phase of industry Guidelines on end-to-end workflows for creating and delivering live and pre-recorded UHD content.

Sony’s announced they’re collaborating with both Evertz and Grass Valley for interoperability among the IP based broadcast equipment of the companies.

Canon CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S – Affordable EF cine-servo zoom lens

Most over-used word of the show:

It’s usually ‘game-changer’, but I think year, ‘interoperability’ wins it!

So, that was what caught our eyes at NAB Show 2016. What caught yours?
