Suitable for all skill levels
An intensive and hands-on introduction to the role of the live studio director/vision mixer. Techniques covered include knowing the HD vision mixing desk, keying, layering, use of programme and preset bus, DVE, transitions, masking etc. Directing multi studio cameras and understanding camera angles. Working with producers and presenters. This course offers a balance of theory and plenty of opportunity for hands-on training, working with crew and talent.
Duration: 2 days (Day 1: 09:30-17:00. Day 2: 09:30-17:00)
AM: Covering as many aspects of the vision mixing desk as possible including; Keying, Layering, Programme & preset bus, DVE, Transitions etc. Cutting techniques, mixing, wipes and keying. Develop gallery directing skills and the ability to communicate effectively using talkback. Manage a crew including cameras, sound, vision control, graphics operator and talent. Understanding camera angles.
PM: The first practical exercise. ‘The chat show’ – a 1+1 interview set up. Working with a full crew, each delegate will have the opportunity to direct/vision mix a live show, learning when to cut, the best time to cut, bad cuts etc. This exercise allows the delegate to become familiar with cutting and concentrates on the art and technique of good and bad cuts.
AM: Delegates will get the opportunity to watch several examples of cutting interviews and discuss techniques used.
PM: The second exercise: ‘The shopping channel’ – to cut a 1+1, with product, using keys. Again working with a full crew and talent, the delegate will direct and vision mix a short sell. This exercise combines the skills already learnt and puts them into practice with the addition of keying graphics. This puts the delegate in the role of a director/vision mixer in a live shopping channel or news environment, where keying plays an important part. Finally, Questions and Answers. Information on useful career paths, useful websites and organisations for director/vision mixers within the industry.
This course is designed for: Candidates new to the industry or college leavers wishing to gain further skills. Vision mixers with little or no directing experience. Directors with little or no vision mixing experience. Already established director/vision mixers wishing to enhance their skills.
